Adriane writes:

Handcrafts as well as hand made textiles in the traditions of the ancient Silk Road are everywhere to be seen in Uzbekistan. Once a part of the Soviet Union until 1991 the country was closed to tourism until 2016 when new leadership began a period of modernization. Now Uzbekistan welcomes people from all over the world.  The people are lovely, architecture is astounding and the food is delicious. The old walled cities of Samarkand, Bukhara and Khiva were once important trading centers along the old Silk Road and have been preserved and restored as UNESCO world heritage sites. The increase in tourism has been a boon to the preservation of traditional crafts and textiles as in the Fergana Valley where ancient practice of sericulture is in full view as mulberry trees line streets and roads. Traditional dress is common amongst older people on the street in most cities.
